RUGBY
METHODIST CHURCH CENTRE
was formed in 1984 from the amalgamation of three previous Methodist
churches – in Market Place, Railway Terrace and New
Bilton. Shortly afterwards Cambridge Street Methodist Church
also joined.
Market
Place
was a Victorian building dating from 1868 and had an entrance where
there is currently a greengrocer’s shop next to the Clock Tower. The
church was sold and demolished in 1981. Market Place itself was a
replacement for an early 19th century Wesleyan Church in
Chapel Street (hence the name!). This too has now been demolished.
Railway
Terrace
Methodist Church joined the Market Place “society” in 1964 in
anticipation of the new church which took a further 20 years to come to
fruition. The Railway Terrace building is still in use as a church by
Rugby Evangelical Free Church.
New Bilton
Methodist Church was built in the early years of the 20th
century as a mission church. It stood on high ground at the junction of
Lawford Road and Victoria Street. The building was used for some
activities after Market Place had been demolished, and was subsequently
sold and used for housing developments.
Cambridge
Street
Methodist Church is also still used as a church by Rugby Christian
Fellowship.
Rugby
Methodist Church Centre,
generally known as RMCC, was built on a new site which became available
when Russelsheim Way and the gyratory system were built. The premises
include a worship area seating 250 people, an adjoining lounge which can
be used for overflow, a large hall and two smaller classrooms together
with the usual facilities. The entire premises are on one level and the
design was disabled-friendly from the outset. As the building was
completely new, facilities such as a hearing loop and double glazing
were all incorporated. We have recently added modern audio-visual
facilities to enhance our worship.
RMCC
still has some people who came from the constituent churches, but the
congregation and membership is largely more recent than that. We hope
you will want to come and join us and extend a warm welcome to all
